About Us

    Invest in personnel
Our personnel play an extremely important role in suggesting solutions that have given Seisland a reputation for innovation. Stone Lake's applications and business processes have benefited greatly from our field personnel's hands-on advice. Stone Lake has one of the lowest turnover rates in the industry. One reason for this is management's willingness to involve employees in making decisions; another is our commitment to providing field crews with exceptional support, up-to-date and well-maintained equipment and any available information to ensure the job goes smoothly.

    Invest in technology
Leading-edge technology helps us provide the solutions our clients require - safely, accurately and with minimal footprint to the environment. Our use of leading edge equipment and technology in all areas of surveying, mapping and information systems provides us with a competitive advantage in the industry.

    Understand each client
At Stone Lake, we recognize that customers have their own preferred methods of operation. Our depth of experience, technology and equipment enable us to customize our service to each customer to ensure that requirements are achieved in the best possible manner.

    Keep constant contact
If you want the best job done, you expect your vendor to keep you in the loop, especially when field conditions are different than expected. At Stone Lake, our processes and technology ensure daily field reporting and therefore allow you maximum control over your job.

    Make information accessible
The GIS data we develop is housed in the industry-standard ESRI platform which means it can be integrated with your systems for use by multiple departments to maximize its usefulness and value to you.

    Protect our staff
We understand that our role in a job is sandwiched between that of many other contractors, and that this sometimes puts our team under pressure. That said, we take direction from you, our client, only - and only to the extent that it does not place our personnel or the job standards at risk. We are very upfront and honest with clients in explaining when we cannot perform requested tasks, or meet requested timelines, which always is the wise choice in the long run.

  • The Stone Lake Joint Venture
  • Our joint venture is structured in such a way that Stone Lake contracts Seisland Surveys Ltd. of Calgary, Alberta to perform GIS, online mapping and information management services, field mapping, pipeline locating, advancing, 2D and 3D seismic and 3D laser scanning field surveys. As a result, Stone Lake has adopted the policies, procedures, documentation and safety manual of Seisland.

Seisland is an experienced, safety-oriented operator that was first awarded its provincial Certificate of Recognition (COR) in 2004 and has maintained its COR through a succession of internal and external audits since that time. Seisland has been providing surveying and mapping services to the oil and gas exploration industry since its inception in 1980. Services provided by Seisland include preliminary project services, GIS, online mapping and information management services, 2D, 3D and 4D seismic, and 3D laser scanning field surveying services which include field mapping, pipeline locating and advancing using survey technologies including GNSS, GPS/barometer, GPS/LiDAR and INS.

  • Our Mission
  • Too often, companies think about short-term investing, short-term profitability, and short-term staffing in order to endure economic swings. At Stone Lake we think long-term, and big-picture. That means we think about planning for the future, foreseeing shifts in technology, and retaining staff long-term in order to give our clients, vendors, and employees stability. Aiming to be a leading provider of mapping, surveying and GIS services, we make wise investments to reduce costs, improve productivity, increase capability, heighten accuracy, and improve accessibility of geographical data for a diverse range of needs – today and in the future.

  • Our History
  • Seisland Surveys Ltd. and Jimmy Mendo, a Tulita district businessman, formed a joint venture, Stone Lake Surveys Ltd., in May 2004. The company’s principals are Jimmy Mendo from Tulita, Northwest Territories and Garvin Geck from Calgary, Alberta. Stone Lake is an aboriginal-owned business with Jimmy as the majority shareholder and beneficiary of the Sahtu Dene Metis Comprehensive Land Claim as well as a member of the Tulita Dene Band. Since its inception, the joint venture has completed numerous summer and winter seismic programs in the Northwest Territories. Led by Jimmy Mendo, who brings a wealth of knowledge of the region, its inhabitants and its local businesses, Jimmy interacts with clients at Stone Lake's regional office and the clients corporate and field offices. He also assists with managing field operations and has involved the company in donating to a cross-section of community events and activities in the Tulita district.

Stone Lake’s first seismic survey was performed in 2004. Since then, the company has completed over one-dozen seismic programs in the Sahtu Region, mainly in the Tulita District and also a few programs in the neighbouring Fort Good Hope and Deline districts. In the spring of 2013, Stone Lake also performed a 3D laser scanning survey and delivered the information on TriliGIS, its online mapping and information management system.

Although Stone Lake’s work has been intermittent at times since 2004, activity has been picking up, with some of the major energy companies acquiring hundreds of millions of dollars in mineral leases from the Government of Canada’s 2011 and 2012 land sales. They have begun exploration of the new Canol Formation shale oil play in the greater Normal Wells region.

In 2013 Stone Lake dramatically stepped up its service offering, adding 3D laser scanning services and offering its online mapping and information management system, TriliGIS, available to clients to archive and access all of their asset and mapping-related information, including seismic maps, general GIS data and 3D laser surveyed data.

Thanks to this forward-thinking, we have been able to invest in some very advanced technologies to streamline our work, and handle more types of jobs. For example, we were among the first companies to utilize hand-held GPS (Global Positioning Systems) technology to provide field culture maps for the seismic industry. We also invested in INS (Intertial Navigation System) and barometry technology to aid in heavily treed areas where satellite reception is poor. INS has allowed us to work in underground mines, inside tunnels, and mountainous terrain.

Seisland employs up to 60 technical and field staff who handle an enormous spectrum of mapping, surveying and GIS work. We continue to weather our industry's rainy days, and we are proud to lead the way in big picture thinking!
